CNU Men's Soccer Returns to Action Wednesday Evening as Captains Host Washington and Lee at 5:00 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After ten days off, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday evening as the Captains (5-2-3) welcome in Washington and Lee University (6-3-1) for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff. The game will be the front end of a doubleheader with the women's team, which will host Southern Virginia University immediately following the conclusion of the men's game at approximately 7:00 p.m.

The Captains long layoff came after Christopher Newport opened the season with eight straight games at home before a two-game road trip to Ohio on September 27-29. CNU was 5-0-3 after the homestand and then dropped both games in Ohio to run their season record to 5-2-3 on the year. The Captains were ranked No. 22 in the nation in last week's United Soccer Coaches poll and are now receiving votes in this weeks release.

Fans unable to attend the game in person can view the game in a live video webstream while also watching live stats at CNUsports.com.

The matchup against Washington and Lee will be the 11th all-time meeting between the two programs. CNU is 3-5-2 all-time against the Generals including a 2-1 win on the road last season. The last time W&L traveled to Newport News was in 2022 when the two teams, both ranked in the top-25, played to a scoreless draw. Eight straight games in the series have been decided by one goal or less.

This season, sophomore Manzi Siibo leads the offense with nine points on four goals and one assist. He has registered a pair of game-winning goals and ranks second on the team in shots with 15. Veteran midfielder Jason LaViola has had a breakout season facilitating the offense and has a team-high five assists to go with one game-winning goal. LaViola notched the winner against Washington and Lee last season off a feed from Barry Jones. Caleb Jones also scored in the game.

Washington and Lee dropped three of their first four games under first-year head coach Lumumba Shabazz, but the Generals have bounced back with a six-game unbeaten streak since (5-0-1). Coming off a 2-2 draw against Averett in ODAC play, the Wednesday night matchup will be the final non-conference tilt of the season for Washington and Lee. Weyimi Agbeyegbe leads the offense with 15 points on six goals and three assists while Dmitri Tulloch has added 12 points on four goals and four assists.

Following the mid-week matchup the Captains will hit the road again to take on another nationally-ranked opponent as they travel to Fredericksburg, Va. on Saturday, October 12 to face the top-ranked University of Mary Washington Eagles. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
