UNION, N.J. - Christopher Newport University heads to the Garden State for a Saturday New Jersey Athletic Conference battle with Kean University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Kean's Alumni Stadium.
Christopher Newport, now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the NJAC, is coming off a solid defensive effort last Saturday in a 24-7 home victory over Rowan University during Homecoming Weekend at CNU. Kean, meanwhile, is 2-4 on the season and the Cougars are 2-1 in league play. Kean fell on the road last Saturday at the College of New Jersey, 48-7.
"Every week is a new test for us, and we certainly can't look past anyone," Head Coach
Paul Crowley said. "Kean has improved so much over what we saw last season, we're really going to have to play well to win this game. I think we're focused and ready to play, we've had a good week in practice. We've had some good efforts this year on the road, and we're going to need a similar effort on Saturday to beat Kean."
Christopher Newport University used a stingy defensive effort and took advantage of several key miscues by Rowan to record the 24-7 victory over the Profs last Saturday at TowneBank Stadium on the CNU campus. The Captains built a 17-0 at halftime, and then held off the Profs in a defensive dominated second half. Sophomore quarterback
Connor Barry threw two first half scoring passes, connecting with junior receivers
Trey Hayes and
Colin Hart, and junior running back
Gunner White posted a late scoring run to provide all the offense the Captains would need. The defense, meanwhile, played at a high level and held the Profs to just 259 total yards and seven points, and also forced three fumbles, two of which were recovered by the Captains.
Christopher Newport and Kean will be meeting for the tenth time in history, and the Cougars have won five of the first nine contests. Christopher Newport has taken the last two games, including a 34-10 triumph last season at TowneBank Stadium. The series began with an NCAA Tournament game back in 2011, a game won by the Cougars, 34-10. Kean has won four of five games played in the series at Kean's Alumni Stadium.
The Cougars got off to a great start in conference play with victories at home over William Paterson (25-18) and at Montclair State (16-13). In non-conference play, Kean lost at SUNY Morrisville (7-0), at home to Ursinus (31-17), and at Dickinson (21-14). The Cougars have been out-scored this season by their opponents, 138-79.
