CNU Women's Tennis Opens Dual Schedule With 7-0 Win Over North Carolina Wesleyan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team opened the dual slate on Friday afternoon with a dominant 7-0 win over North Carolina Wesleyan (0-1). The Captains (1-0) earned the doubles point and picked up a singles sweep for the shutout win against the Battling Bishops. 

In doubles play at the Eyre Courts on campus at Christopher Newport University, the Captains got a sweep of pairs play with wins at No. 1, 2 and 3. Kylie Schaefer paired up with Raine Weis for a 6-2 win on the top line and CNU earned the doubles point with a win at No. 2 behind Kendal Chang and Samantha Robertson, 6-2. For good measure, the Captains swept the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 where Lindsey Bergelin and Eva Taylor cleaned up against Linda Nhiwatiwa and Ajla Selimovic. 

Moving into singles play, the Captains quickly clinched the match with the first three wins. Eva Taylor finished out a 2-0 day in her 2024 dual debut with a clean 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 against Selimovic. Then, CNU got a win from rookie starter Kendal Chang at No. 4, defeating Bethan Fothergill by a final score of 6-4, 6-0. 

Clinching the match was the senior leader at No. 1, Raine Weis, who earned a 6-3, 6-3 win against the Battling Bishops' top liner Elisa Mariotti. From there, CNU finished out the remainder of the singles matches undefeated. 

CNU earned a win at No. 2 where Mia Linam defeated Mendoza Romero, 6-1, 6-3, and also picked up the win at No. 3, where sophomore Kylie Schaefer earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Andrea Elaez Miranda. Finally, Samantha Robertson earned a hard-fought win against Ivanna Torres at No. 5, finishing off a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 win.

The Captains will return to action on Saturday, October 26 against Johns Hopkins University at 3:00 p.m.
