Captains Hang Tough With No. 1 Mary Washington But Suffer 1-0 Loss on the Road

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- A penalty kick goal with eight seconds remaining in the first half doomed a valiant upset bid by the Christopher Newport men's soccer team as they traveled to No. 1 Mary Washington and suffered a 1-0 loss on Saturday afternoon. The Captains outshot the home team, 16-12, including five shots on frame, but the Eagles managed to hold off CNU in a hard-fought battle between two Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference teams.

With the loss, Christopher Newport fell to 5-4-3 on the season while Mary Washington remained unbeaten with a 13-0-1 overall record.

The lone goal of the contest would come from the penalty spot where Diego Guzman scored his third goal of the season. With the clock ticking away, Mary Washington pressed for an offensive opportunity late in the first half. The Eagles rotated the ball from the left side of the field to the middle and on an entry pass into the box, a Christopher Newport defender made contact with a Mary Washington attacker and the spill resulted in a PK.

It was one of only three shots on-goal in the game the CNU defense surrendered to one of the most dangerous attacks in Division III. Averaging nearly three goals per game coming into the game, the Captains defense held the Eagles to just one goal for only the third time this season.

Leading the defensive effort, junior goalkeeper Hayden Dewey made two saves in a complete-game effort.

On the offensive end, Caleb Jones took a pair of shots on-goal to lead the attack while Barry Jones had a team-high four attempts including one on-goal. Asher Kuzemka and Manzi Siibo each added two shots apiece for the Captains.

CNU will return to action in a week when they travel to Salisbury University on Saturday, October 19 with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
