No. 5 CNU Women's Basketball Hosts Salisbury Saturday Afternoon at 2:00 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Looking to add to a seven-game winning streak, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will host Salisbury University (6-13) on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center. Christopher Newport is 19-1 overall this season and boasts the longest active home winning streak in Division III heading into the matchup. 

A number of streaks and runs have continued for Christopher Newport including a 48-game home winning streak that stretches back to December 1, 2018. This season, CNU is 8-0 at the Freeman Center and the run at home is the second longest active run in NCAA, behind only a 50-game run by Division I's top-ranked South Carolina. 

Christopher Newport and Salisbury matched up exactly two weeks prior to Saturday's afternoon matinee, with the Captains earning an 86-39 victory on the road. It was the 15th straight win in the all-time series against the Sea Gulls, which has seen CNU take a commanding 30-12 lead in the matchup. The Captains have won seven straight at home against Salisbury, including an 86-38 win the last time the Sea Gulls traveled to Newport News on January 14, 2023.

This year, the Captains have leaned on incredible balance up and down the roster with 11 different players starting at least one game this season and all but one active player aveaging over 10 minutes per game. Senior forward Alivia Giles leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 11.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while junior forward Hannah Kaloi as added 11.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Senior guard Camille Malagar is the lone CNU player to start all 20 games and she is adding 9.4 points pe game while shooting 48.8 percent from the field. 

Defensively, CNU has been on a tear, holding their last seven opponents during the current win streak to 49.1 points per game including three straight sub-40 performances. The Captains rank seventh nationally in turnovers forced per game, with 27.2, and are grabbing 14.2 steals with 3.8 blocks per game. 

Salisbury is looking to end a six-game skid that has seen their overall record fall to 6-13 under first year head coach Aprile Preller. The Sea Gulls have a pair of student-athletes averaging a team-high 10.4 points per game in Nicole Miller and Alex Bull. Cora Shafer leads the rebounding efforts for Salisbury with 5.7 per game. 

Following the Saturday afternoon tilt, the Captains will return to action on Wednesday, January 31 with a 6:00 p.m. bout against Mary Washington.
