NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University opened the 2023 football season last Saturday with a 45-0 home win over Southern Virginia. Their challenge this Saturday will be far more difficult, as
Paul Crowley's team travels to Baltimore to take on 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins University. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at Homewood Field.
The Blue Jays are also 1-0, having beaten Ithaca College last Saturday, 27-17. Johns Hopkins is coming off a 10-1 season a year ago, and the Jays have won 24 of their last 27 games dating back to 2019.
"This will be a great test for our program," Crowley said Thursday. "Johns Hopkins is a terrific program, year in and year out, and we'll need to compete at a high level to be successful. Offensively, defensively, and on special teams, they really don't have any area where they are lacking. We're going to need to take the momentum from last week's victory and build on it, and we've been working hard all week in practice to be ready for the test."
The Captains jumped to an early lead last week and never looked back, scoring six touchdowns and a field goal while not yielding a point to the Knights. Senior quarterback
Matt Dzierski ran for three scores, and sophomore running back
Gunner White crossed the goal line twice. The final score of the day came on a 32-yard interception return by sophomore
Taizuan Brown.
The Blue Jays broke open a close game by scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter against Ithaca to open a 21-10 advantage at halftime, and went on to the ten-point victory. Junior quarterback Bay Harvey threw for three touchdowns and ran for a score as the Jays opened the year with a home victory.
Saturday's tilt will be the first-ever of the programs, and the matchup is a result of a scheduling agreement beginning this year between the New Jersey Athletic Conference and the Centennial Conference. CNU will host Centennial member Gettysburg next Saturday, September 16, at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium in a 4:00 p.m. start. The Captains will also travel to Dickinson on October 7th.
