Captains Host Salisbury in Family Weekend Showdown Saturday at TowneBank Stadium

CNU GAME NOTES // LIVE VIDEO // LIVE STATS

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
It's the longest series in Christopher Newport University football history, and Saturday the Captains and Sea Gulls of Salisbury University renew their rivalry as they battle for the 22nd time. Kickoff at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium is set for 2:00 p.m.

Not only is the matchup a renewal of a fierce rivalry, but it also comes during Family Weekend at CNU and will be played in front of a sellout crowd.

"The atmosphere at TowneBank Stadium is always fantastic, and I know Saturday will be extra special being Family Weekend," Head Coach Paul Crowley said. "Salisbury is the team to beat year in and year out in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. They've done an exceptional job over the years, and we're going to have to play a complete game to beat them."

Both teams were off last week, and the Captains enter the game with a 2-1 record, while the Gulls are just 1-2. Two weeks ago at TowneBank Stadium, CNU dominated Gettysburg by a score of 49-17. Salisbury is coming off a 42-7 home defeat to Johns Hopkins two weeks ago, and lost the previous week at Muhlenberg, 29-17.

"Don't let their record fool you," Crowley continued. "They've lost to two really good programs, and the games were much closer than the final scores indicated. It's the first game of conference play for both of us, so I know both teams will be amped up and ready to play."

The series dates back to the very first game in CNU football history in 2001, when Salisbury defeated the brand new Captains by a 21-7 score. Over the years, the Gulls have managed to win nine out of ten games played at TowneBank Stadium, and lead the overall series, 16-5. CNU will be looking to end a string of seven straight victories by the Gulls in the series. Last year, the squads met in the final week of the season in what turned into the NJAC Championship game. Salisbury escaped with a 36-33 victory at Sea Gull Stadium, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

All seats for the game are sold out. Standing room only tickets will be available for $5.00 at the TowneBank Stadium gate beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Stadium gates will open to all fans at 1:00 p.m.

All Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
