RALEIGH, N.C. -
Sammy Carroll served a career-best five aces while
Samantha Dorn led the team with 16 kills as the Captains topped Meredith in four sets on Friday night.
First Set (Meredith 25-22)
The Captains fought hard in the first set and maintained a lead through most of it. Two kills form
Kyla McIntyre put CNU up 22-19, but Meredith took the next six points and claimed the first set of the match with their final run.
Second Set (Captains 25-17)
CNU nearly hit .400 in the second set as they turned in a match-best hitting percentage of .393. The Captains won three straight points early in the set, and won three more later on to take a 11-10 lead. Later, with a 16-14 lead, CNU won six straight points with kills from
Macy Burk and
Kyla McIntyre to take a 22-14 lead. All it took from there was an errant serve from Meredith and two more McIntyre kills to close out the second set.
Third Set (Captains 25-18)
Samantha Dorn had 7 of her team-leading 16 kills in the third set. Her first three kills accounted for three of CNU's first six points, but her sixth was what brought the score to 24-18 and brought up set point for the Captains.
Alyssa Dozier took care of the third set with a service ace to put the Captains ahead 2-1.
Fourth Set (Captains 25-17)
Back-to-back aces from Sammy Carrroll were part of a five point run that put the Captains ahead 11-8. Carroll served the two aces and assisted on the other three kills in the 5-0 run. CNU wouldn't relinquish their lead for the rest of the match, taking eight of the final ten points of the fourth set. Carroll served her fifth ace of the match to take match point for the Captains.
