No. 14 CNU Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Stalemate Against William Peace on Sunday Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After trading penalty kicks in the second half with the William Peace University Pacers, the 14th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in a Sunday night matchup at Captains Field. The Captains saw a four-game win streak come to an end but CNU remains unbeaten so far this year with a 4-0-1 overall record.

Both goalkeepers highlighted the performances by both teams including eight saves for the Pacers' Ayden Miller in his first appearance of the year and five for CNU's sophomore keeper Hayden Dewey. Throughout the game, both players were challenged with opportunities but stood tall with highlight-reel saves.

Unfortunately for both, their defenses committed crucial fouls in the box that forced the netminders into tough penalty kick situations. First, it was CNU that stepped up to the spot in the 51st minute when Mason Field delivered his fourth goal of the season. The senior midfielder has now scored in four of the first games this season and the leading scorer has now put seven of his 12 shots on frame for a .583 SOG%.

The 1-0 lead would not hold, however, as Brennan Lagana converted on his attempt from the spot in the 74th minute for the Peace Pacers to even up the score at 1-1.

In the final three minutes, the Captains looked prime for the winner when rookie Ben Stefanon powered a header off the crossbar on a corner kick attempt. The ball bounced high on the rebound and eventually found freshman Yazan Yaghmmour for a second header attempt that sailed just wide. Both Yaghmmour and Stefanon each had shots earlier in the half that were saved by the Peace keeper as CNU pressured the Pacers defense with 21 total shots.

In the game, CNU put nine shots on frame with Jason LaViola leading the team in attempts on target. Kyle Stenzel, Caleb Jones, and Luke Peri all added one apiece.

Christopher Newport will put the six-game homestand in their rear-view mirror as they hit the road for the next three games. CNU will travel to Colorado Springs to take on UC Santa Cruz and host Colorado College next weekend for a pair before traveling to Stockton University in New Jersey to wrap up the slate over the next two weeks.
