SALISBURY, Md. -- The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will continue the national playoffs on Saturday at 3 p.m. when the Captains square off against sixth-ranked Dickinson during the NCAA Quarterfinals at Salisbury's Sea Gull Stadium.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport sits at 18-2 overall, while Dickinson is 17-3.
Tickets for Saturday's game are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens, students, and children. The winner of Saturday's game will advance to the NCAA Semifinals, which will take place at Sea Gull Stadium on Sunday at 3 p.m. The advancing team will face the survivor of the other quarterfinal bout between No. 2 Salisbury and No. 9 Washington & Lee.
The Captains advanced to the second week of the national playoffs after posting a pair of commanding victories in the squad's first two games. Christopher Newport kicked off the postseason with a 17-9 triumph over Hope last Friday. The very next day, the team knocked off No. 7 Gettysburg, 17-12.
So far this postseason,
Alex Brendes has stolen the show with 14 points, including nine goals. Eight of his points came against Gettysburg, which marked the most in an NCAA Tournament game in program history. His five strikes against the Bullets also equaled the highest output by a Captain in the national playoffs.
Along with Brendes,
Andrew Cook has nine points in the postseason, while
Warner Cabaniss has won 25 of his 37 faceoffs. On the defensive side,
Zac Hanway has a .533 save percentage and 7.90 goals-against-average over the past two games, while
Burke Widhelm and
Ryan Young have combined for seven takeaways.
Overall this season, Christopher Newport ranks 11th nationally in scoring offense (17.20 goals per game) and 18th in faceoff percentage (.634). On an individual level, Cabaniss is 11th in faceoff percentage (.680) and ground balls per game (10.20), while
Coby Auslander is 24th in assists per contest (2.60).
Brett Jackson's 12 man-up goals also place him eighth on the national charts.
Dickinson reached the quarterfinals after beating John Carroll, 19-3, in the opener on Saturday before toppling Stevens, 12-10, on Sunday. The Sweet 16 victory over the Ducks marked the 300th career win for head coach David Webster.
The Red Devils have been led by an outstanding faceoff unit, headlined by John McKee. The junior has won 64 percent of his attempts this season, which ranks 25th in the NCAA. Meanwhile, his 9.10 ground balls-per-game average is 24th in the country. As a team, Dickinson slots 20th in the nation in faceoff percentage (.624) and 11th in ground balls (811).
Equally effective on the back end, Chris Brandau ranks 24th in the NCAA in goals-against-average (9.06), while Evan Karetsos is averaging two takeaways per game. Offensively, Skyler Schluter has 68 points, including 41 assists, while James Isaacson has a team-high 42 goals.
Christopher Newport and Dickinson last met on March 18 during the final day of the Mustang Classic. The Captains posted a 13-12 victory in that contest after overcoming an 11-8 deficit in the third quarter. Brendes scored four of the game's final six goals, including the game-winner with three minutes left in regulation.
Along with Brendes, Cook added five points, including four goals, while Hanway pocketed 11 saves. Cabaniss also won 15 of his 26 faceoffs. For Dickinson, Schluter had four points, while McKee went 15-for-29 at the dot. Brandau finished with 10 saves.
