LIVE VIDEO // LIVE STATS

SALISBURY, Md. -
Christopher Newport University opened the 2023 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Thursday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over the University of Mary Washington. The three-team, double-elimination tournament is being played at Salisbury University.

Sophomore left-hander Jamie Martin was called on to start the opener, and Martin delivered with a two-hit shutout performance  that included 12 strikeouts. The native of Lorton, Va., the National Freshman of the Year last season, gave up just two singles and one walk to the Eagles while pitching all seven frames. She improved her record on the year to 9-3 with the triumph.

The Captains got the only runs they would need when they scored two unearned runs in the second inning, as the Eagles committed two miscues in the field. CNU added single runs in the third and fifth innings to give Martin plenty of support. Junior Brooke Greaver, the C2C Player of the Year, drove home a run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, plating senior Bianca Palmer-Scott. Sophomore Meredith Brickner also registered an RBI, and three of CNU's hits in the game were doubles, coming off the bats of seniors Nicole Apai and Palmer-Scott as well as junior Katie Currin

The Captains are now 25-8 and will play the top seed in the tournament, and the top-ranked team in the nation, Salisbury. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Salisbury is 32-4 and has won 14 straight games, including two over the Captains last Saturday in the regular-season finale.

Mary Washington fell to 19-18 with the loss, and the Eagles will now play Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination game against the loser of the CNU/Salisbury game.
