Seniors Shine as No. 4 Christopher Newport Men's Lacrosse Steams Past Kean, 20-5

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Starring on Senior Day, the veteran members of the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team carried the Captains to a 20-5 victory over Kean during a Coastal Lacrosse Conference bout on a splendid Saturday evening at Jennings Family Stadium.

After participating in an on-field ceremony prior to the game, Christopher Newport's fourth-year seniors combined for 12 goals and 15 assists against the Cougars. Drew Miller and Coby Auslander had six points apiece, while Robby Adams and Andrew Cook added hat-tricks. Danny McMinn also chipped in with two goals and a pair of assists.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, fellow senior Zac Hanway was adding his name to the record books. He pocketed 13 saves during the contest, including the 500th of his career. With that performance, he became just the third goalie in program history to reach that mark, joining former All-American Matt Hayden and longtime legend Andy McGregor.

The win also was Hanway's 45th career victory, moving him past Hayden for the all-time program record.

Along with the veterans, some of the younger members of the squad also added historic efforts. Controlling possession, Warner Cabaniss won 14 of his 15 faceoffs and collected 11 ground balls. The second-year star now boasts 298 total rollers in his career, which stands as a new school record. Former star Ari Elgort set the previous standard after collecting 294 ground balls from 2010-13.

Brett Jackson also picked up his ninth hat-trick of the year, including his 50th strike of the season. He is just the fourth Captain to reach that mark, joining Cook, former All-American Dylan Rice, and longtime standout and current broadcaster Will Geise.

With the victory, Christopher Newport wrapped up the regular season with a 15-1 record, including a 4-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the setback dropped Kean to 10-6 and 0-4 against conference foes.

Piecing together the perfect start to Senior Day, fourth-year standout Michael Brost took the opening faceoff and quickly won the duel. With possession, Miller found Auslander charging down the alley for the first goal less than a minute into regulation.

With an early lead, the Captains immediately took control of the contest. Jackson landed back-to-back daggers, including a rip from the right side off a beautiful skip pass from Alex Brendes. Later, Auslander connected with Robby Adams, who cut inside for a fast 4-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the defense was equally effective. Aidan FitzGerald jarred the ball loose from an attacker who slipped to the turf in the early going. Later, Hanway added his 500th save, Brandon Young ripped the ball away from a midfielder on a failed clear, and Ryan Young chipped in with an interception on an errant pass.

Capitalizing on the extra possessions, Christopher Newport continued to stretch its lead. McMinn deposited two straight strikes, including a fast-break bullet off a pass from Campbell Pozin. Later, McMinn notched an assist of his own after setting up another rip by Adams, which helped the team carry a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.

Continuing to frustrate the opposition, Miller made an outstretched grab to steal a pass on a failed clear before finding Cook barreling towards the cage. Later in the second stanza, Jackson converted a diving blast along the crease before Carson Hoffman orchestrated a filthy strike to round out the first-half scoring.

After snatching a pass from Auslander, Hoffman had a defender draped on his back on the right side of the field. With little room to work, he simply switched the stick to his left hand to free up a little space. Still blanketed, he snapped off an underhand shot around the hip of his defender and had enough power to send it spinning inside the left post.

Holding a 10-2 lead entering halftime, Christopher Newport never lost its momentum. Adams continued the assault in the third period before Miller chipped in with two straight goals that saw him shake the keeper with a series of fakes. Shortly thereafter, Thomas Mark added a pair of goals, including a missile that capped off a 30-yard sprint in which he circled through four defenders.

Cook also scored twice in the third quarter, including a highlight-reel tally that saw him break the ankles of a defender with a devastating cut before ripping from long range.

Meanwhile, on the defensive side, AJ Rosacker smacked the ball away from an attacker with a perfectly-placed poke before Aidan Wheeler blasted another Cougar with a physical check on the inside to punctuate a separate surge. Hanway also secured seven saves in the stanza, including a clutch stop during a man-down situation.

Leading 17-3 entering the fourth quarter, the Captains quickly put the game on ice. Kicking off the final frame, Miller came through with a strip on a clear before corralling the roller. Seconds later, Auslander slipped a feed inside to Brendes, who struck along the crease.

Later, on a quick clear, Zack Sands started an around-the-horn goal as he dished the ball to McMinn, who connected with Jamie Smith along the left post. Then, in the waning moments of regulation, Bryan Reilly sidestepped a defender at the top of the zone and avoided a slide on the inside before depositing a bouncer into the back of the cage.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 55-38 advantage in shots and a 54-33 lead in ground balls. The Captains also won 22 of the game's 29 faceoffs. Along with Cabaniss' work at the dot, Brost won seven duels and grabbed six rollers. FitzGerald also collected four ground balls and added two takeaways.

After locking up the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the Coastal Lacrosse Conference playoffs, Christopher Newport will return to action on May 5 with the league semifinals, which will take place in Salisbury, Maryland.
