Kendall Krause's Historic Appearance Helps Lead Christopher Newport Women's Lacrosse Past Catholic, 13-9

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Kendall Krause matched the program's all-time record for career appearances while starring on both ends of the field as the fifth-year standout helped carry the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 triumph over Catholic on a beautiful Wednesday evening at Jennings Family Stadium.

The contest was Krause's 77th outing as a member of the Captains, matching the school record set by Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Kaitlin Quigley from 2008-11. Making the most of her time on the field, she stuffed the stat sheet with two goals, two assists, and a pair of takeaways to go along with a season-high four ground balls.

Along with Krause's historic appearance, Kelsey Winters added six points, including four assists. With that performance, she eclipsed 50 helpers for the second straight season. Prior to Winters' recent run of dominance, only Christopher Newport Hall of Famer Meghan Harkey had ever reached 50 assists in a single campaign.

Benefitting from five cards on the visitors, the hosts eventually deposited four man-up goals during the game, which marked the third-highest total in school history. Two of Syd Guidi's four tallies came during extra-man situations, making her just the 11th Captain to notch a pair in a single contest. Additionally, Hope Hunter came through with her fifth man-up strike of the year, establishing a new program record.

Just as effective on the defensive end, Christopher Newport had 12 takeaways, including two apiece by Krause, Madi Rozgonyi, and Riley Rafterry-Lee. Between the pipes, Hadley Chadwick also pocketed nine saves while recording her ninth win of the year. That equaled former standout Kaitlyn Ready for the fourth-most by a freshman in school history.

Overall, the Captains improved to 10-6 on the season, while the setback dropped Catholic to 8-8. It also snapped the Cardinals' five-game winning streak.

Although Catholic slipped out to an early 2-0 lead in the contest, Christopher Newport fired back. First, on the defensive side, Rozgonyi stuck to an attacker along the crease and disrupted a pass, which thwarted a surge by the visitors in the middle of the opening stanza. Moments later, Maddie Rusinko batted down a dangerous feed before Emma Jackson won a race for the loose ball.

Following the defensive stand, Krause found Sloane McDonald streaking up the field for the team's first goal. Then, with just seconds left in the opening quarter, the Captains connected on a buzzer-beater.

Running a slick give-and-go, Julia Iapicca tossed the ball to Winters before cutting back inside. After grabbing the return feed, the senior landed a blow on the interior just as the clock expired.

Back on even ground entering the second stanza, the hosts continued to shine on both ends of the field. Early in the period, Brookelyn Morrison added an incredible highlight. Flashing her speed, the freshman jumped a passing lane and picked off a feed near midfield. Despite taking a stick to the face, she managed to catch the pass, adjust her eye mask, and cruise up the turf without ever breaking stride.

Shortly thereafter, the offense went back to work. Krause shuffled a ball over to Guidi, who put her defender in the spin cycle. Pushing to her left, she quickly cut back to her right before unleashing a dagger in one smooth motion to give the Captains their first lead of the game.

Less than 40 seconds later, Winters added a little cushion after powering around the right pipe before uncorking a turnaround jumper between two defenders and the goalie.

Although Catholic clawed back with two straight strikes, Winters and Guidi put a perfect punctuation mark on the opening half. First, Winters dropped a dime to Guidi, who snapped off a high rocket over the stick of a defender. Then, both stars connected on free-position attempts to grab a 7-4 lead entering the break.

After halftime, Christopher Newport continued to smother the Cardinals with relentless pressure all over the turf. Early on, Rozgonyi orchestrated a fantastic ride up the right sideline before jostling the ball loose. Then, on the left side, McDonald clamped down on another clear attempt and stripped a midfielder before Morrison collected the roller.

Meanwhile, the attack never lost its rhythm. Iapicca scored her second goal while showcasing her physicality. After securing a pass from Winters, she dropped a defender to the turf while barreling through the center of the zone. With a little freedom, she whipped a screamer into the back of the cage for an 8-5 edge.

Continuing her highlight-reel run, Iapicca assisted on a dart by Krause before adding her third goal. On the play, she split two defenders at the top of the zone before rushing inside. Although two more Cardinals attempted to close out on the interior, Iapicca cut right through them before dunking on the doorstep.

Staring at a 10-5 deficit, Catholic retaliated and slapped two late goals on the board to claw back within three entering the final stanza.

Needing a response, Christopher Newport found an answer at the start of the fourth quarter. Less than 30 seconds into the period, Hunter buried a low liner into the bottom left corner of the cage off a free-position attempt. Then, just moments later, Iapicca slipped a pass down low to Krause, who sliced a shot inside the right post.

Leading 12-7, the Captains clamped down on the defensive end. Chadwick stoned two straight rips by the visitors before Jackson put her stick in the back of an attacker and forced a turnover along the crease. Later, Krause made a leaping interception with an out-stretched snag on a lengthy feed by the visitors to kill off another rally with less than six minutes to go in regulation.

With little left to prove, Guidi unleashed a missile on the move for her fourth goal to help put the finishing touches on a 13-9 triumph.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 17-9 lead in ground balls, while Catholic had a 33-27 advantage in shots and a 13-11 edge on the draw. Morrison, Guidi, and Maddie Tomaszewski all had three draw controls for the Captains.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday at noon when the team hosts No. 4 Salisbury on Senior Day.
