NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team is back in action on Saturday as the Captains welcome the University of Mary Washington for Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference action at Captains Park. Head coach
John Harvell announced a game time change for the matchup as the teams attempt to beat the rain with first pitch now scheduled for Noon.
The Captains are 28-7 overall this season with four straight wins and 11 wins in the last 12 games. CNU will take on a Mary Washington squad that is coming off an 8-5 win over No. 6 Randolph-Macon College on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles have won three of the last four while improving to 26-10 overall.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for the action at Captains Park with links available on the baseball schedule at CNUsports.com. The game will serve as Senior Day for Christopher Newport, who will celebrate the careers of the senior class in one of their final home regular season games prior to the action.
The two teams will play twice this weekend starting with Saturday's home game for CNU. On Sunday, the Captains will make the return trip to Northern Virginia to face the Eagles at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va. The all-time series favors Christopher Newport, 31-10, including a run of six straight wins for CNU heading into Saturday's game. The Captains are 17-4 all-time at home aginst Mary Washington.
This season, sophomore catcher
Zach Dzarnowski has helped lead a patient Captains offense by working 36 walks to lead Division III with 1.24 walks per game. His team-leading .550 on-base percentage has helped the transfer star lead the squad in hitting with a .364 average. Dzarnowski has driven in 25 runs and scored 29 times while starting in 29 of 35 games this season.
He is one of four CNU players hitting over .360 this season as rookies
Ayden Stuffel and
Josh Reinhold are joined by
Scott Crosson in that quartet. Crosson is one of two players to score 30 or more runs this season while hitting .361 at the top of the CNU lineup.
On the mound, the Captains rotation has been solid led by
Dylan Weber (5-2, 3.83 ERA0,
Jack Braley (4-0, 1.19 ERA0, and
Jackson Baird (5-1, 2.30 ERA). Weber was named the National Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday and leads the squad with 68 strikeouts this season. Baird ranks second in his first year with the Captains, striking out 60 batters in 43.0 innings pitched. Braley has enjoyed a breakout campaign and ranks 10th nationally and first in the conference in ERA.
Mary Washington ranks in the top-20 nationally in total hits and the Eagles are hitting .310 as a team. Junior outfielder Bobby Ayscue is hitting .360 to lead the way while also hammering a team-high 22 extra-base hits. He has scored 44 runs, ranking 20th nationally, and also leads the Eagles with 34 RBI. On the mound, Brendan McComber is 7-1 with a 3.83 ERA in a team-high 12 appearances including seven starts. Rookie Jackson Myers is 4-2 with a 2.68 ERA while the bullpen has been led by Ty Lowe with a 3.25 ERA in 10 appearances.
Following the weekend C2C set, the Captains will travel to Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 26. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
