FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will continue league action on Saturday at noon when the Captains travel to Mary Washington for a Coastal Lacrosse Conference contest at the Battleground Turf Field.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport has a 13-1 record, including a 2-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Mary Washington is 6-7 overall and 0-2 against conference foes.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at UMWEagles.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Saturday's game will mark Christopher Newport's fourth straight road tilt after a home date against Southern Virginia was cancelled on Wednesday. The midweek match-up was scratched from the schedule after the Knights were hit with a series of injuries and illnesses that prevented the squad from making the trek to Newport News.
In their last action, the Captains took down Stockton, 25-8, during a league showdown on April 15. In that game,
Coby Auslander posted five points, including three assists. His final helper was the 107th of his career, breaking the previous school standard of 106 set by former All-American Matt Crist from 2015-18.
Along with Auslander,
Brett Jackson posted his 12th man-up goal of the year, which topped former legend Will Geise's single-season program record of 11 set in 2017. Jackson's total also places him fourth on the national charts in 2023.
In addition to Jackson,
Warner Cabaniss is 12th in the NCAA in ground balls per game (10.36) and 15th in faceoff percentage (.668).
Ryan Young is also 33rd in takeaways per contest (2.57), while Auslander is 42nd in assists per game (2.36).
As a team, Christopher Newport ranks 14th in the NCAA in faceoff percentage (.642). The squad also sits ninth in both clearing percentage (.893) and shooting percentage (.346).
Mary Washington had its most recent game suspended in the third quarter after a pair of lightning delays caused a halt in the action at Kean. The score was level at 11 before the postponement as Dave Votapek deposited three goals for the Eagles, while J.D. Nozemack had three helpers. The game will resume on April 30 at UMW.
Overall this season, Nozemack ranks 17th in the NCAA in assists per game (2.77), while Keegan Shipe is 13th in takeaways per contest (3.08). The squad also slots 19th nationally in man-down defense after successfully killing off 80 percent of its opposition's attempts. Meanwhile, Jacob Fowler has won 120 of his 195 faceoff attempts, and Riley Green boasts a .494 save percentage and 12.49 goals-against-average.
In 19 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 10-9 edge in the series. Last year, the Captains registered a 24-1 victory as Auslander contributed five points for the victors, while Jackson added a hat-trick.
After Saturday, Christopher Newport will return home for the regular season finale against Kean on April 29 at 5 p.m.
