CNU Men's Tennis Blanks Virginia Wesleyan in Friday Afternoon Match, 9-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On a sizzling Spring afternoon at the Eyre Courts, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team picked up a 9-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference action. The Captains improved to 9-7 overall with the win, which featured four players winning in both singles and doubles action.

Leading the charge with wins at No. 1 in both singles and doubles was senior Alec Strause. The veteran paired with Nesh Kumaresan for a dominant 8-1 win in pairs play and then would go on to slip past Felix Bevc on the top line of singles 7-6 (7), 6-3. He was one of four CNU players to win twice on Friday, including his partner.

Kumaresan also earned a singles win at No. 3, playing against Francis Cabaddu. After he and Strause dispatched of Hubert Parawa and Alen Curovic in tandem action, the rookie rebounded from a first-set loss in singles to capture a hard-fought win over Cabaddu (2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8)).

Also winning twice on Friday was Ashton Legum and Vincent Truong. Legum paired with Alex Seretis for a narrow win at No. 2 doubles, taking down Bevc and Cabaddu in a tiebreaker (8-7 (4)) and then went on to win at No. 5 singles in straight sets. Legum downed Cam Perry in the singles bout (6-0, 6-2). Truong made sure it was a doubles sweep with Matthew Dubuque as his partner at No. 3, downing Jonas Juetz and Sainandan Challagundla by a final score of 8-1. In singles, Truong gave up just two games at No. 4 against Juetz for a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Rounding out the clean sweep for CNU in singles was Jake Dolphin at No. 2 and Ryan Monroe at No. 6. Dolphin surrendered a first set victory but bounced back to take down Parawa (1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6)) and Monroe made quick work of Challagundla at No. 6 (6-1, 6-2).

The No. 35-ranked Captains will return to action to close out the regular season on Sunday, April 23 against Washington (Md.). Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
