No. 40 Captains Shut Out Lynchburg in Men's Tennis Action Sunday, 9-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On a beautiful spring afternoon on the Eyre Courts, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team improved to 7-6 on the season with a 9-0 win over the University of Lynchburg (7-5). The nationally-ranked Captains swept all nine matches on the home courts including a two win day by senior Alec Strause

For the second straight day, the Captains' top tandem of Strause and Nesh Kumaresan continued their sparkling run at No. 1 doubles despite a close match. Taking on Levi Vigdorchik and Alex Rintoul, the CNU pair were stretched to a tiebreaker, but escaped with an 8-7 (4) win to improve to 12-1 on the season.

That victory moves the senior-freshman combo into sole possession for the tenth most wins at No.1 in a single season.

In other tandem action, CNU secured an 8-4 win at No. 2 and an 8-1 win at No. 3. Ahun Vodela and Vincent Truong paired up for the win at 2, defeating Carter McCleary and Emile Paindavoine; at 3 it was Ashton Legum and Matthew Dubuque against S. Sierra Valencia and Patricio Zepeda.

In singles, Strause added a straight set win at No. 2 against Lauren Muhlhause to cap his two win day. Edvard Porsmyr Hansen improved to 3-0 on the top line, taking down Levi Vigdorchik (7-5, 6-1).

Ryan Monroe had the lengthiest bout at No. 3, stretched to a third set tiebreaker against Sierra Valencia. Monroe and his counterpart traded 7-5 first and second sets before Monroe pulled away in the breaker, 10-2.

On lines 4-6, Tyler Hyun, Alex Seretis, and Aden Bashir captured straight set wins for CNU. Hyun surrendered just a single game at No. 4 against McCleary (6-0, 6-1), and Bashir matched his veteran teammate with a similar finish at No.6 versys Cooper Brewen (6-1, 6-0). At No. 5, Seretis survived a first-set breaker but rebounded with a dominant second set to slam the door on the Hornets (7-6 (4), 6-0).

Next up for the Captains is No. 34 Mary Washington traveling to Newport News for a mid-week matchup this Wednesday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m.
