NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Kiersten Chang and
Mia Linam headlined a narrow win against regionally-ranked N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon as 35th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis improved to 4-10 on the season. Chang and Linam paired up for a win at No. 2 doubles and both players also contributed singles wins as the Captains edged out the Battling Bishops, 5-4.
Leading the way for Christopher Newport,
Kiersten Chang and
Mia Linam captured an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles to help propel the Captains to a 2-1 lead after pairs play. Also winning in doubles was CNU's tandem at No. 1,
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis. At No. 1, Weis and Trate won, 8-5, over regionally-ranked Kristal Dule and Cristina Mendoza Romero.
With the slight edge heading into singles action, the Captains would battle back-and-forth with the Bishops. The visitors captured wins at 1 and 2, but Linam and Chang earned wins at 3 and 4. The bout would come down to the final two singles matches where CNU suffered a loss at No. 5, but senior
Kendra Womack stepped up in her final home regular season match with a straight set win at No. 6.
Linam played at No. 3 against Mendoza Romero and captured a 6-4, 6-2 win for the Captains. Chang also won by the same score at No. 4, taking on Andrea Elaez Miranda. Finally, Womack picked up the most dominant win of the day for CNU by dropping just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Julie Schoorsman.
Christopher Newport dropped N.C. Wesleyan to 8-9 overall on the season. The Captains are now 4-10 heading into postseason play, which will begin at the Eyre Courts next weekend with the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship.
