Second-Ranked Captains Sweep Doubleheader at William Peace...Extend Winning Streak to Ten Games

RALEIGH, N.C. - Christopher Newport University showed its versatility Wednesday afternoon, winning both ends of a doubleheader in very different fashion at William Peace University. The Captains won game one, 1-0, in a classic pitcher's duel, and then broke out the big bats in the nightcap in a 15-2 victory over the Pacers. Keith Parr's team clobbered five home runs on the day, and is now 17-3, and has won ten straight games. WPU fell to 15-15 for the season.

Sophomore pitcher Kate Alger went the distance in the opener, giving up no runs on just three hits, and CNU later crushed four home runs in the second game to open a big lead and cruise to the win in five innings. The game was halted due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Junior third baseman Brooke Greaver supplied the only run in game one, smacking her ninth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie. Greaver now has 19 career home runs over the last two seasons, and moved into a tie for eighth place on CNU's all-time home run list.

Alger opened the day by improving her record to 9-1 with another dominant effort in the circle. The right-hander from Staunton struck out 11 Pacers, walked just one, and scattered three singles on a sunny and pleasant day in North Carolina's capital city. Alger was matched by William Peace's Katherine Murphy, who had held the Captains at bay until Greaver led off in the top of the sixth inning with the blast to centerfield, giving Alger and the Captains all they would end up needing in the 1-0 triumph.

In game two, the Captains jumped to an early lead on a two-run shot in the second inning off the bat of junior Katie Currin, her fourth long ball of the season. The big fly was one of three hits on the day for Currin in six at bats. The onslaught continued as CNU proceeded to score 11 times in the third inning to blow the game open. Greaver opened the flood gates in the third when she drove in two runs with a double, and later in the inning sophomore Kendall Bentley clubbed her second home run of the year, a two-run shot, and freshman Isabel Hall later left the yard by crushing a three-run blast, the first of her CNU career, to open a 13-0 advantage. Christopher Newport plated two more runs in the fifth when junior Brooke Childress posted her first home run of the season, a two-run dinger, that pushed the lead to 15-0. The Pacers were able to break through for two runs, their only scores of the day, in the bottom of the fifth to account for the 15-2 final score.

Sophomore Olivia Kim and freshman Mia Aiello combined to pitch the nightcap for the Captains, giving up just one earned run on five hits to the Pacers. CNU now has won 38 of 42 games all-time vs. WPU.

Christopher Newport's two road victories opened a stretch on the schedule of eight straight road games for the Captains. CNU will travel to Lynchburg this Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. against the University of Lynchburg.
