LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A seven-game winning streak was snapped for the 12th-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team on Wednesday afternoon as the Captains (24-7) fell on the road at No. 9 Lynchburg, 14-6. A late inning comeback attempt, scoring four runs in the final two frames, was thwarted as CNU suffered just it's second loss in the last 14 games.
A nine run third inning proved to be the difference in the game as Lynchburg sent 15 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on four hits with three errors committed in the inning by Christopher Newport. CNU outscored the home team, 6-5, the rest of the contest, but could not overcome the Hornets outburst at the plate in the third.
Christopher Newport actually got on the board first, scoring a single run in the top of the third when
Ayden Stuffel led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a RBI infield single by
Josh Reinholds. CNU stranded a pair in the inning and ended the top half up just 1-0.
Then came the nine run inning against CNU starter
Dylan Weber and reliever
David Gingras. Lynchburg would tack on two more to take an 11-1 lead after four making a CNU comeback a lofty proposition. The Captains started to chip away in the bottom of the fifth when again Stuffel started the inning with a base hit. This time, a deep fly to right center amounted in a triple for the first-year player, and he promptly trotted home on a
Sam Benedict single into left field moments later.
In the top of the eighth, the Captains sent three more across home plate to trim the lead some more.
Drew Caroline led off with a single and
Justin Bowers added a base hit next.
Shane Kelleher pinch hit and earned a hard-fought walk on a nine-pitch at-bat, loading the bases for pinch hitter
Ethan Weaver. The senior infielder cleared the bases with a three-run double to left center field and finished the day with a team-high three RBI.
As the Captains came to the plate for their last at-bat, the offense continued to battle as Reinhold led off with another infield single. Caroline added another single and the duo moved up on a wild pitch.
Jason Mendler then delivered an RBI on a sacrifice fly, but that was all the Captains could muster against the Lynchburg pitching staff.
Christopher Newport will take an extended break in the schedule for the first time this season as they will not play again until next Tuesday, April 4 when they travel to Eastern Mennonite University for a 3:00 p.m. game.
