NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport junior
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen picked up a win over a regionally-ranked opponent, but the Averett Cougars (3-2) edged out the Captains at home on Friday afternoon, 5-4. CNU falls even to 5-5 on the season with the loss.
Christopher Newport took a 2-1 lead after doubles, but the Cougars rallied to win four of six matches in one-on-one action. The Captains won at No. 2, with Porsmyr Hansen, and No. 5, where
Jake Dolphin secured the win.
In doubles play,
Alec Strause and
Nesh Kumaresan continued an outstanding spring season by improving to 9-1 on the year. The Captains' top tandem defeated Shori Nishizoe and Jorge Figueroa by a final score of 8-4, to get CNU on the board first.
The match at No. 3 finished next, where
Vincent Truong and
Ahun Vodela pulled away for an 8-2 win over Kazuki Fukushima and Sam Egui. CNU nearly had the sweep at No. 2 where
Ashton Legum and
Alex Seretis played well against Rufus Nurminen and Martinho Goncalves, but ultimately fell, 8-6.
The big win came at No. 2 singles where Porsmyr Hansen was facing Figueroa, ranked 18th in the Atlantic South singles rankings. The Captains' veteran outlasted Figueroa in the first set, 7-6 (4), before dropping the second, 3-6. After the match had already been decided, Porsmyr Hansen pulled CNU back within one with a 6-4 win in the third set.
Dolphin kept CNU in the match at No. 5, downing Fukushima (6-1, 6-4). With the win, the CNU freshman drew his overall record even at 7-7 while improving to 5-1 in the No. 5 slot this spring.
Christopher Newport will look to quickly shake off the loss by turning around and facing Rhodes College (5-5) on Sunday, March 26 at 10:00 a.m.
