CNU Senior Alec Reilly Named C2C Baseball Player of the Week; Captains Set to Host Southern Va, Travel to NC Wesleyan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Alec Reilly was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for baseball on Monday afternoon, marking his first career recognition from the league office. After hitting .417 and leading the Captains to three more wins, Reilly and the rest of the nationally-ranked CNU baseball team is set to host Southern Virginia at 3:00 pm on Tuesday before traveling to N.C. Wesleyan for a 6:00 pm first pitch on Wednesday.

Reilly reached base in all four of Christopher Newport's games this week while recording hits in three out of the four. He hit .417 with two extra-base hits and drove in a team-high eight runs while scoring twice. His on-base percentage was .500 in 18 plate appearances with five hits and four walks and he added a pair of sacrifice flies. Against Marymount, Reilly drove in six in his first two plate appearances with a bases-clearing double in the first and a three-run homer in the third.

He joins Scott Crosson as Player of the Week selections for CNU this year while Daniel Elliott and Jackson Baird have each garnered Pitcher of the WEek recognition once each.

The Captains, who improved to 18-6 last week, face another busy week of action starting on Tuesday, March 21 when they host Southern Virginia at 3:00 p.m. Following a road trip to North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday, CNU will return home for a three-game set against St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) at Captains Park. Prior to the doubleheader on Saturday, March 25, the Captains will host Medina 14 Foundation Day to honor the life of the Captains' baseball alum, Ricky Medina, who died tragically earlier this year. The foundation was created to benefit causes important to Ricky, such as supporting young athletes and brain cancer research.

On Tuesday, the Captains will take on a Southern Virginia squad that is 7-8 overall this season after dropping three straight against Brevard this weekend. The Knights have been led by Stockton Hall, hitting a team-leading .368, and Mitch Smith, who has delivered seven extra-base hits with 11 RBI and 11 runs scored. On the mound, Hall is 0-2 with a 3.63 ERA to lead the pitching staff.

CNU will then make a return trip to Rocky Mount to take on N.C. Wesleyan after the two teams matched up at Captains Park last week where CNU pulled away for an 8-3 win. Since that loss, the Battling Bishops have bounced back with three straight wins and improved to 13-4 on the season. Jackson Hobbs leads the squad with 33 RBI this season while hitting a team-best .467 with 24 runs scored. Payne Stolsworth, who started against CNU last week, leads the pitching staff with a 3-0 record in six starts, posting a 3.27 ERA.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all the action on Tuesday. Links to both can be found on the baseball schedule at CNUsports.com.
