ARLINGTON, Va. -- In just his first two at-bats on Saturday afternoon, Christopher Newport senior
Alec Reilly delivered enough run support for the Captains pitching staff, driving in six runs with a bases clearing double in the first and a three-run homer in the third. Reilly's performance at the plate headlined a 14-run outburst at Marymount on Saturday afternoon as Christopher Newport improved to 18-6 overall this season with a 14-5 win on the road.
The Captains jumped on the Saints with three runs in the first and went on to lead by as many as 11 in the contest with a 12-1 lead after five and a half frames. CNU added two more runs in the top of the eighth for the final tally as 17 different Captains got into the box score while four more pitched for CNU.
In addition to Reilly's big bat, rookie
Ayden Stuffel also hammered out his first career home run in the game with a solo shot in the top of the third just two batters after Reilly left the yard. That run would give the Captains a 7-0 lead after two and a half innings which proved enough as the CNU pitching staff allowed only five runs.
CNU scored three runs in the first when
Josh Reinhold singled and stole second, followed by walks to
Justin Bowers and
Jake Benedict to load the bases. That would bring up Reilly, who blistered a 3-2 pitch with the runners on the move into the gap in left center. All three runs would come around on the seniors two-base hit.
In the third,
Zach Dzarnowski walked and moved up to third when Benedict doubled to left field. Once again, Reilly stepped in and delivered the big blow with a three-run homer to right field to put CNU in front, 6-0. Stuffel's solo shot two batters later extended the lead with his first career round-tripper.
Scott Crosson manufactured a run for the Captains in the forth after reaching on a HBP and moving up on a wild pitch and groundball out before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bowers. In the fifth, CNU extended the lead even further with three runs on three hits. Reilly reached on an error and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a single by Stuffel,
Justin Liakos followed with a base hit into center field to plate Reilly. With two outs, Reinhold stepped in and drove in a pair with a two-out two-run single into center field, plating Liakos and Stuffel.
Eric Wilson singled through the left side and came around to score on a throwing error for a single run in the seventh, and CNU scored two more in the eighth on three hits by the CNU reserves. Wilson added a lead-off single in the inning and moved up to second on a hit-by-pitch from Benedict.
Kevin Mackmin drove in a run with a single and
Daniel Elliott added an RBI single to center with two outs to round out the scoring for the CNU offense.
On the mound, sophomore
Jackson Baird followed up a 13-strikeout game last weekend with his third win of the season on Saturday. He worked through five innings with just three hits and one run allowed against the Saints, striking out five. In relief,
Brandon Cassedy,
Danny Checkosky, and
Kyle Lewis came out of the pen for the Captains. Checkosky tossed two innings with two K's and one unearned run surrendered while Lewis worked a perfect ninth with one strikeout.
The Captains will return to action on Tuesday, March 21 as they host Southern Virginia University at 3:00 p.m. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
