Brooke Greaver Smacks Three Home Runs as Captains Come From Behind Twice Saturday in Wins over Trine and Berry

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University recorded two more come-from-behind victories on Saturday, beating second-ranked Trine and fifth-ranked Berry at Captains Park in the Cross Bay Bash. Keith Parr's squad is now 6-2 to start the season. CNU opened the day with a 7-5 triumph over Trine, and followed with an 8-5 victory over Berry. Junior third baseman Brooke Greaver supplied the fireworks, smacking three home runs to lead the Captains to the two home wins.

Greaver, who went four-for-seven at the plate for the day with seven runs batted in, crushed two home runs vs. Trine and another vs. Berry. Her dramatic three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning in the opener gave the Captains a 7-5 walk-off victory over Trine, the school the Captains beat last season in the NCAA Tournament finals.

CNU took an early 3-0 lead vs. the Thunder, but Trine posted two runs in the third frame and three more in the fourth for a 5-4 lead. The lead would last until the bottom of the seventh, when Bianca Palmer-Scott singled with one out to get the rally started. Following a walk to Meredith Brickner, Greaver came to the plate, and delivered her second home run of the game to win it, 7-5, for the Captains.

In the second game, Berry opened a 4-0 lead thanks to two runs in each of the first two innings. CNU wiped away the lead by scoring seven in the third frame and went on to an 8-5 victory. Greaver smacked a two-run home run in the big seven-run third inning, her third of the day. Brickner had two singles and drove home three runs for the Captains, who scored 15 runs on 23 hits in the two Saturday victories. Brenna Morefield was five-for-six in the two wins, and posted three singles in three trips to the plate vs. the Vikings in the second game.

Sophomore pitchers Kate Alger and Jamie Martin each picked up a victory, and are both 3-1 on the year. Alger went the distance in the opener vs. Trine, allowing just two earned runs while striking out eight over seven innings. Martin tossed the first four frames vs. Berry, and Alger finished up by throwing the final three.

Christopher Newport will return to action to host seventh-ranked Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader on Wednesday at Captains Park. The action will begin at 3:00 p.m.
