Benedict Brothers Help Lead Christopher Newport Baseball Past Bridgewater, 11-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team stretched its winning streak to seven straight games on Wednesday afternoon as the Captains stormed past Bridgewater, 11-1, during a non-conference showdown at Captains Park.

Against the Eagles, Sam Benedict laced three hits, drove in a pair of runs, and scored twice during a well-rounded performance. Not to be outdone, his brother, Jake Benedict, added two hits and three RBI as the freshman siblings helped account for nearly half of Christopher Newport's runs during the victory.

Along with the Benedicts, Ayden Stuffel, Josh Reinhold, Alec Reilly, and Zach Dzarnowski all had multi-hit efforts as well. Overall, nine different players recorded a hit, while eight Captains crossed the plate at least once.

While the offense tormented Bridgewater throughout the day, Jay Cassady was equally impressive on the mound. The junior southpaw scattered seven hits and only one run over eight innings of work. He also struck out five while silencing the BC lineup.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 7-0 on the season, marking the squad's best start since ripping off nine wins in a row to open the 2019 campaign. Meanwhile, the setback dropped Bridgewater to 0-5.

After the two squads traded runs in the early going, the Captains broke a 1-1 deadlock in the bottom of the third as Reilly blistered a ground-rule double to left center, which plated Reinhold and Justin Bowers. Later, Jake Benedict added a little insurance in the fourth with a single up the middle that chased in his brother for a 4-1 edge.

As the offense came to life, Cassady starred on the mound. After surrendering a run in the top of the third, he escaped a minor jam with a strikeout. Then, over the next three frames, he did not allow a single runner to reach second base, aided by a slick 5-3 double play in the fifth.

Meanwhile, the offense kept humming. In the sixth, the hosts broke the game open. Kicking things off, Jake Benedict pounded a two-run double to left center before Stuffel followed with an RBI single. Later, after the Captains loaded the bases, Daniel Elliott added a sacrifice fly to cap off a four-run inning, which handed Christopher Newport an 8-1 edge.

After that point, the team cruised to the victory. Reinhold came back with a run-scoring single in the seventh before Dzarnowski and Sam Benedict added similar knocks in the eighth to round out the scoring.

With an 11-1 advantage, Cassady finished off his day with a pair of strikeouts in the eighth. With little left to prove, the bullpen took over in the ninth as Ryan Morrison induced a double play before sending the final batter down swinging to close out the contest.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday when the Captains take on Rochester in Charlotte, North Carolina at 9:30 a.m.
