NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking on NCAA Division I Hampton University at the James River CC, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team picked up one doubles and one singles victory but suffered a 7-2 setback. The Captains (0-2) got a doubles victory from
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis on the top line of doubles action while
Anna Campbell picked up an impressive singles win at No. 5.
The Captains challenged themselves with a tough opening weekend, facing a top-25 Johns Hopkins squad Saturday and the NCAA Division I foe on Sunday. Against the Pirates, Weis and Trate showcased why they are one of the top doubles pairings in Division III with an 8-6 win. Taking on Angelina Blinova and Sofia Sokolova, the regionally-ranked Captains pair earned their seventh win of the 2022-23 season.
CNU nearly snared a second point in doubles at No. 3 where
Kiersten Chang and
Kendra Womack battled hard against L. Jorrin Fernandez and Laura Peralta, but suffered a tight 8-6 loss.
In singles play, Weis stretched Blinova to a tiebreaker in the first set before falling 7-6 (2), 6-3. Chang also had a strong showing at No. 4 singles against Mio Kozaki but ultimately dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 decision to her Pirates counterpart. The highlight of singles play came at No. 5 where
Anna Campbell secured a win over Franzene Tsui by a straight set score of 6-3, 7-5.
The victory was the first career singles win over a Division I opponent for Campbell. She also notched a Division I win in doubles last year, also against Hampton.
CNU will return to action this weekend as they travel to Washington & Lee University to face a pair of neutral site opponents. The Captains tough schedule will continue as they will take on No. 10 Sewanee on Friday, February 17 before facing No. 12 Case Western Reserve on Saturday, February 18.
