CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Captains of Christopher Newport University got back in the win column Sunday afternoon, recording a 68-49 triumph at Wilson College. The victory at Gannett Memorial Field House improved the 12th-ranked CNU squad to 8-3 on the season, while the Phoenix fell to 5-6.
John Krikorian's squad knocked down seven three-pointers in the second half, and grew a six-point halftime lead to as many as 21 after the break. Freshman
Hasan Hammad led the way for Christopher Newport, scoring a career-high 19 points, which included four threes in the second half. Hammad was coming off a 14-point, 13-rebound performance in Thursday's loss to Virginia Wesleyan at the Freeman Center.
"I thought we had the right mindset and our guys played with great intensity today," Krikorian said following the victory. "I was pleased with our defensive effort, and we certainly made some big shots in the second half. Holding a team to 49 points on their home floor is a great accomplishment, especially considering the number of freshmen we're playing. They're facing a trial by fire and getting a lot of important playing time, and overall doing a good job."
CNU trailed briefly in the opening half, and the Phoenix held a 12-9 advantage just over six minutes into the game. The Captains took a 17-14 lead on
Ty Henderson's three-point play with 11:10 to go in the opening half, and enjoyed the lead the rest of the way. CNU held a 29-23 edge at the intermission, and then opened the second half with an 8-1 run to pull away.
The Captains had four players reach double figures in all, as Hammad was joined by junior
Ty Henderson (12), freshman
Toa Hollenbeck (11) and senior
Jahn Hines (10). Henderson also contributed eight assists, six rebounds, and two steals to go with his dozen points.
"Ty has come a long way, in his career and also just in this season," Krikorian continued. "He's playing with more confidence and returning to his former form, and was a big part of this win today."
Wilson College was led by senior Darryl Garib's 22 points, with 16 coming in the first half. CNU's defense held the Phoenix to just 33 percent shooting (18 of 54), and Wilson connected on just two of 16 from beyond the arc. The game was the first meeting ever of the programs.
Christopher Newport will play its final game before Christmas on Tuesday when the Captains travel to Union, New Jersey, to take on the Cougars of Kean University. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
