NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A rivalry that dates back to the first year of Christopher Newport University men's basketball will be renewed Thursday night at the Freeman Center. The Captains, ranked 12th in the country and riding a six-game winning streak, host the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. The battle will be the 90th all-time meeting of the programs, a series that began in the 1967-68 season. CNU, currently 7-2, has won 52 times to VWU's 37 victories in the series.
John Krikorian's squad is coming off a 61-50 victory Monday night over Averett University at the Freeman Center. Senior All-American
Jahn Hines led the way with 14 points as the Captains were able to pull away from the stubborn Cougars in the second half and record their sixth straight triumph.
Virginia Wesleyan enters Thursday night's tilt with a 9-1 record, and Dave Macedo's Marlins have won three in a row. Most recently, VWU defeated Roanoke College, 70-58, on Sunday in Virginia Beach. The Marlins only loss of the season came on November 29th at Randolph-Macon, 50-41.
Last year on December 15th, the Marlins pulled out a victory over the Captains in the final seconds at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, 77-76. Omari DeVeaux, now a junior, raced down court for a layup at the buzzer to give VWU the victory. DeVeaux had 27 points in the game, and is averaging a team-high 17 points per game this season for the Marlins. The loss at VWU was one of just three all season for the Captains in their first National Championship campaign.
