NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following an eight-day break for final exams, Christopher Newport University returns to action Monday night at the Freeman Center. The Captains, 6-2 overall and 4-0 at home this season, will host the Cougars of Averett University. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. The game begins a busy stretch for the Captains, with four games scheduled over a nine-day span.
John Krikorian's squad is riding a five-game winning streak, and the Captains are ranked tenth in the country in the latest weekly poll from D3hoops.com. CNU is coming off a 64-61 road triumph at Mary Baldwin on December 2nd. Senior All-American big man
Trey Barber has put up big numbers for the Captains, and is now averaging 18.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Fellow All-American senior
Jahn Hines is scoring 12.4 points per game, and is now tied for 23rd place with Terry Thomas on CNU's all-time scoring list. Hines is 73 points behind Terry Gray for 22nd place on the list.
The Cougars of Averett are just 1-8 over their first nine games of the season. AU has dropped six straight games, most recently suffering a 49-46 loss to Virginia Wesleyan in Danville last Wednesday. The only victory for the Cougars so far this season came on November 15th at home over Greensboro College, 55-54.
Christopher Newport and Averett are former league-mates in the Dixie and USA South Athletic Conference, and the schools have met 90 times on the hardwood. CNU holds a 73-17 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to December of 1976. The Captains have won the last nine head-to-head meetings, including a 71-54 victory last December in Danville.
The Cougars, now members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, are led by senior guard Jordan Lewis, a product of Virginia Beach, who is averaging 13.9 points per game. Freshman guard Jamison Graves is scoring in double figures as well, averaging 11.1 points per outing.
