FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Christopher Newport split their two Saturday afternoon matches on the road with a win over Susquehanna and a loss to Centre.
Centre 3, Christopher Newport 1 | (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19)
First Set
Alyssa Dozier led the Captains in the first set with six kills while
Macy Burk added four. Centre kept the score close and rallied to take a 22-21 lead late in the first set. But Dozier hit back-to-back kills to retake the lead for CNU. Abby Swartz tied the score for Centre, but Centre missed the next attack and
Kyla McIntyre hit her third kill of the set to clinch the set for CNU.
Second Set
Centre took seven of the first eight points of the second set to start off with a lead. Two kills from
Sammy Carroll and an ace from
Noelle Starr helped the Captains catch up and narrow the Centre lead to just one. But the Captains weren't able to keep pace with a Centre attack that hit over .400 in the second set as they evened the match score at 1-1.
Third Set
Sammy Carroll helped the Captains start the third set right with a block and a kill to win the first two points for CNU. Kills from
Samantha Dorn and
Kyla McIntyre helped the Captains stay ahead in the set until Centre went on a run to take a 15-13 lead. Dozier, Burk, and
Megan James were part of four straight points that helped the Captains take back the lead. But Centre managed to pull away at the end of the set with four of the last five points going their way.
Fourth Set
Centre started out the set with a 10-2 lead that quickly gave them an advantage in the fourth set. Four straight points for the Captains included kills from Carroll and James helped the Captains start to chip away at the Centre lead. The Captains got within five points, but weren't able to close the gap and dropped the fourth set.

First Set
Two kills from
Macy Burk and two aces from
Julia Gleason brought the Captains up to a 13-6 lead in the first set.
Megan James served two more aces and later,
Sammy Carroll added two more to give CNU six aces in the opening set. The Captains hit .579 in the first set and won eighth of the final nine points to cruise to a first set win.
Second Set
CNU saw contributions from several different attackers in the second set.
Macy Burk,
Megan James,
Kyla McIntyre, and
Alyssa Dozier each hit three kills as part of a 15 kill onslaught that featured a .481 hitting percentage. The Captains took care of business in the second set by taking nine of the final 11 points.
Third Set
Burk and Dozier each added four kills in the third set. With the score tied at 10, the Captains won 10 of 12 points to push their lead out to eight. The Captains got aces from
Megan James and
Noelle Starr on their way to a quick, three-set victory.

Next Up
Christopher Newport will play in the semifinals of the Coast-to-Coast Conference tournament on Friday (Nov. 10) in Salisbury, Maryland. They'll play again on Saturday in either the 3rd place game or the conference championship.
