Kindrick Braxton of the Christopher Newport University football squad was honored on Thursday by being named the Linebacker of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Richmond. The organization released its first group of seven post-season honors, and Braxton was chosen the top linebacker among those who competed in the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA, and NCCAA levels.
Braxton, from Goochland, Va., led the Captains in tackles for the second straight season this fall. He made 73 total stops, and 47 were solo tackles. Braxton's statistics also included an interception, forced fumble, and five passes broken up. He was named first team All-Conference in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.Â
Braxton made ten tackles twice this year in games at Johns Hopkins and vs. Montclair State. He set a CNU all-time record with 21 tackles at Salisbury last year as a junior. Braxton concluded his CNU career with 211 tackles, seventh on the Captains all-time list.Â
Christopher Newport finished the 2023 season with a 7-4 record, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
Paul Crowley's squad won its first-ever New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship since joining the conference in 2015.
