BALTIMORE, Md. -
Sammy Carroll became the second Captain ever to reach 5,000 assists, but the Captains fell against No. 16 Wesleyan to conclude their season.
First Set (Wesleyan 25-19)
The Captains jumped out to a 7-2 lead with three kills from
Samantha Dorn and aces from
Megan James and
Macy Burk. Dorn would finish the set with a team-best five kills, but Wesleyan rallied to score seven points and take the lead. The Cardinals held off the Captains to take the first set.
Second Set (Wesleyan 25-19)
Samantha Dorn led the Captains in the second set with four kills and helped the Captains keep pace with the Cardinals early. But Wesleyan's attack brought through late in the set and put together a run that gave them the lead. Late kills from Dorn and
Megan James cut into that lead, but the Captains couldn't complete the comeback.
Third Set (Captains 25-14)
CNU hit .303 in the third set, the best percentage of either team in this match. Though they trailed early, the Captains scored nine points in a row to turn a 14-10 deficit into a 19-14 lead.
Macy Burk served three aces as part of the run and
Alyssa Dozier had two of her eight third set kills in this run. Dozier and
Kyla McIntyre hit back-to-back kills to win the third set for Christopher Newport.
Fourth Set (Wesleyan 25-17)
Dorn hit two kills early in the fourth set as the Captains started out in the lead. But Wesleyan rallied to come back and tie the score. Kills from McIntyre and Burk were part of four-straight points that helped CNU retake the lead, but again Wesleyan was able to come back and capture the lead. The Cardinals scored several points in a row to wrap up the fourth set and advance in the tournament.

- Sammy Carroll reached 5,000 career assists in Friday's match. She's now the second Captain ever to reach 5,000 assists and joins Brittany Collins as the only CNU players to ever reach the mark.
- Carroll currently is the active leader in Division III in career assists and ranks third across all three NCAA divisions behind only Hannah Pukis (Oregon) with 5,073 and Savannah Vach (Miami FL) with 5,059. Both are Division I All-Americans.
- Carroll also achieved a double-double this afternoon with 47 assists and 10 digs.Â
