NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University has another Top 15 showdown Saturday afternoon, as the top-ranked Captains take on the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
Both teams enter play on Saturday with a 2-2 record to start the season, and both are coming off victories on Wednesday night. The Captains opened their home schedule with a 64-54 triumph over Randolph-Macon College at the Freeman Center. Johns Hopkins traveled to York, Pa., and edged the Spartans of York College, 64-62, to even its record for the season.Â
Senior All-American
Jahn Hines led the way for the Captains Wednesday night, scoring 16 points, and moved up to 29th on CNU's all-time scoring list in the process. Hines now has scored 1,072 career points and needs just 14 to move ahead of Steve Brown into 28th place on the list. Hines is one of just 34 Captains in history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
The Captains, defending National Champions and pre-season #1 in the D3hoops.com poll, also got double-digit efforts on Wednesday from senior All-American
Trey Barber and freshman
Hasan Hammad, who both tallied a dozen points.
The Blue Jays and Captains will be meeting for the fifth time, with CNU holding a 3-1 edge in the all-time series. Christopher Newport opened its 30-3 campaign a year ago by beating Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, 74-61.
Johns Hopkins was ranked 12th in the nation in the pre-season poll from D3hoops.com. JHU has a new coach this year, as Ryan Cain has taken over the program. Cain, who spent eight years as the head coach at Keene State (NH), replaced Josh Loeffler, who was named an assistant coach at the University of Cincinnati after last season. The Jays were 25-5 last year and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Both of JHU's losses this season have come to Top 25 programs in ninth-ranked NYU and 22nd-ranked Washington University.Â
Tickets for Saturday's action will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. The game will follow the Christopher Newport women's game, which will tip off at 2:00 p.m. Captains action is broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and Saturday's game will be joined in progress shortly after the 4:30 p.m. start.
