CNU Women's Basketball Set to Host Captains Round Robin Classic This Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The third-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team welcomes in East Texas Baptist University (1-1) and No. 18 Elizabethtown College (2-0) this weekend for three games in the Freeman Center as part of the Captains Round Robin Classic. The three-game event includes one game on each day starting with a neutral site bout on Friday evening at 6:00 pm followed by the Captains (4-0) hosting ETBU on Saturday at 2:00 pm and Elizabethtown on Sunday at 2:00 pm. 

The Captains are coming off 58-51 win over Bridgewater in the home opener on Wednesday night that saw them improve to 4-0 on the year. Junior forward Hannah Orloff had a phenomenal night with a career-high 14 rebounds paired with a team-high 12 points in the game. 

CNU will be playing East Texas Baptist for just the second time after capturing a 63-53 victory over the Tigers in Marshall, Texas last season. The Captains also faced Elizabethtown last year, marking just the fourth all-time matchup with both teams capturing a couple of wins. CNU and the Blue Jays matched up in the second round of the NCAA Tournament where Christopher Newport earned a 65-55 win.

Through the first four games of the season, senior guard Camille Malagar leads a balanced attack with 10.3 points per game while Alivia Giles and Orloff are each adding 9.0 points per game in the front court. The duo up front has combined for 54 rebounds, averaging 13.5 per game, combined. 

ETBU comes into the weekend with a 53-49 win over Rhodes and a hard-fought 80-71 setback to 12th-ranked Trinity (Texas) during their Tipoff Classic. Head coach Blake Arbegast's squad is led by Payton Hicks with 14.0 points and 5.0 assists per game so far this season. Starting center Hannah Matthews is adding 8.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in a pair of starts also this year. 

Elizabethtown got off to a hot start with an eight-point victory against Dickinson before throttling Misericordia, 77-47, in game two of the young season. The Blue Jays lean on the starting five with all Cyleigh Wilson (15.5 ppg) and Summer McNulty (14.5 ppg) leading the squad in scoring so far. Elizabethtown is also getting a double-double per game from Jessica King, with 12.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game so far. 

Following the Round Robin Classic, Christopher Newport will return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday to close out a four-game homestand against Greensboro College on Sunday, November 26 at 2:00 pm.
