Captains Host Randolph-Macon in Home Opener Wednesday NIght at the Freeman Center

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The top-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University will play at home for the first time as defending National Champions Wednesday night. CNU, off to a 1-2 start to the season, will host the 14th-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Freeman Center. R-MC is 1-1 start to the new season.

John Krikorian's squad is coming off a split over the weekend in Ohio in the Shrine Tournament at Marietta College. CNU defeated Kenyon College, 94-68, on Friday, and then fell to the host Pioneers on Saturday, 73-69. The Captains opened the season last Wednesday night with a road loss at eighth-ranked Hampden-Sydney College, 74-53. Senior All-American Trey Barber posted big numbers on Saturday in the loss at Marietta. Barber registered his first double-double of the season by scoring 18 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.

Randolph-Macon also split two games last weekend in the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament in Virginia Beach. The Yellow Jackets defeated Pfeiffer University on Friday, 84-61, and then fell to host Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday, 49-44.  

The Captains and Yellow Jackets will be meeting for the 32nd time, and Randolph-Macon holds a 20-11 all-time lead in the series. CNU has won eight of the last ten contests, but R-MC prevailed last season in Ashland, 64-59, on January 11th. The Captains followed the loss with 15 straight victories , culminating with a 74-72 victory over Mount Union in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to capture the program's first National Championship.

The 2023-24 season is the 56th in the history of the Christopher Newport program, and Head Coach John Krikorian is in his 13th season leading the Captains. CNU finished its remarkable season last year with a record of 30-3, and Krikorian was selected the National Coach of the Year. He has now recorded an overall record of 291-67 at CNU.

Tickets for Wednesday night's action will be available at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. The game will follow the Christopher Newport women's game vs. Bridgewater College, which will tip off at 5:30 p.m. Captains action is broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 7:10 p.m. Video of the action will be streamed live on CNUsports.com and can be seen by clicking the link at the top of this story. Following Wednesday's game, the Captains will host the 12th-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center, giving CNU three Top 15 opponents in the first five games of the season.
