Top-Ranked Captains Fall Short at Marietta, 73-69, Despite Barber's Double-Double

MARIETTA, OH. - Christopher Newport fell to 1-2 to open the season Saturday night, losing at Marietta College, 73-69, in the Shrine Tournament at Ban Johnson Arena. The Captains were led by senior All-American Trey Barber, who registered the first double-double of the season for CNU by scoring 18 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.

John Krikorian's squad led by as many as 11 in the opening half, surging to a 23-12 edge with 5:19 to play when fifth-year senior Devon Parrish knocked down his second three-pointer of the first half. The Pioneers, now 2-0, then whittled the lead down to four at the intermission, 28-24.

Marietta then continued its comeback and jumped in front six minutes into the second stanza. The Pioneers eventually went ahead by as many as eight, and CNU's efforts to overcome the deficit fell short down the stretch. Barber's layup with 17 seconds remaining cut the advantage to two, but the Captains missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with five ticks on the clock and the Pioneers were able to convert two free throws to provide the four-point victory. Marietta ended up out-scoring CNU in the second half, 49-41.

Barber, who also had four blocked shots, was joined in double figures in the scoring column by Parrish (13), senior Jahn Hines (10), and freshman Toa Hollenbeck (10). Fellow freshman Ethan Ward scored eight points and recorded nine rebounds. Barber and Parrish were both named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts.

The Captains, who converted just 39 percent of their shots from the field, were also hurt by a tough night at the foul line, making just seven of 21 attempts. The Pioneers also suffered in the shooting columns, making just 36 percent of their shots from the field and 51 percent from the line.

Christopher Newport opened the two-day Shrine Tournament by beating Kenyon College on Friday night, 94-68. The Captains will now prepare for their home opener this Wednesday night at the Freeman Center. CNU will host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College (1-1) in a 7:30 p.m. start.
