SALISBURY, Md. - Christopher Newport took down UC Santa Cruz in the C2C Third-Place Match on Saturday afternoon.
First Set (Captains 25-16)
Christopher Newport served eight aces in the first set to cruise to a nine-point win.
Madi Schmidt had the first one to bring CNU even at 5-5 and
Julia Gleason served the first of three aces as part of a four-point run for the Captains.
Sammy Carroll followed her kill with an ace and
Noelle Starr added her second ace of the set a few points later. With a 23-16 lead, Gleason served back-to-back aces to wrap up the first set for CNU.
Second Set (Captains 25-14)
Alyssa Dozier had four of her team-high seven blocks in the second set. Two of them came in the Captains first three points that helped them out to an early 3-0 lead. Dozier blocked back-to-back attacks later on to extend CNU's lead. The Captains took six straight points and saw a four point lead swell to nine and ended the second set on a 11-3 run.
Third Set (Captains 25-16)
Kills from
Samantha Dorn,
Noelle Starr, and
Kyla McIntyre were part of a five-point run that saw CNU extend their lead to 16-10 in the third set. The Captains hit a match-best 15 kills in the set as
Megan James,
Macy Burk, and
Sammy Carroll hit kills to win the team's third set in a row and seal a three-set win.
