ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- After a 25-point win at Averett to open the season, the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will get back to the hardwood this weekend for a pair of neutral site games at the Jean Edge Classic hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan University. The Captains (1-0) will first face off against Emory University (0-0) at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 11 before taking on Maryville College (Tenn.) (0-0) at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12.

The game against Emory, who is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com national rankings, will be the first ever against the Eagles for the CNU women's basketball program. The Captains have faced off against Maryville, a former conference foe in the USA South Athletic Conference, eight times and the Scots own a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series. It will be the first matchup since the 2012-23 season when the Captains earned a season sweep.
Christopher Newport spread the ball around in the game one victory against Averett, with the Captains being led by
Alivia Giles with 13 points.
Mia Wilson and
Ashley Steadman each added 10 points for CNU while all 15 players who saw action got into the scoring column. All fifteen also recorded at least one rebound while Steadman led the way with seven boards and Giles added six caroms off the glass.
Emory will open the 2023-24 season against the Captains after going 17-8 and reaching the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Fifth-year head coach Misha Jackson returns All-American Claire Brock for her fifth year after leading the Eagles in scoring a year ago with 16.3 points per game.
Maryville was picked fifth in the Collegiate Conference of the South preseason coaches poll and will play Methodist University in their opener on Saturday afternoon before facing Christopher Newport on Sunday. The Scots returns leading scorer, Courtney Carruthers, who averaged 17.6 points per game last season.
Following the two games in North Carolina, the Captains will head back to the Freeman Center for the season's home opener against Bridgewater College on Wednesday, November 15 at 5:30 p.m.
