CNU Women's Tennis Falls to Johns Hopkins, 7-2, in Fall Finale

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to Johns Hopkins (1-0) on a hot October afternoon Saturday, closing out the fall schedule with a 1-1 overall record. The Captains will take a three-and-a-half month break before returning to the dual season in February.

CNU earned a pair of doubles wins in the match on Saturday, played on the Eyre Courts in Newport News. Despite two matches going to a tiebreaker, the Blue Jays swept through singles play to secure the win over the Captains.

Getting the home team out to a 2-1 lead, Christopher Newport picked up a pair of wins in tandem play with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. On the top line, Tessa Trate and Raine Weis paired up for an 8-6 win against Ashley Chang and Sophia Kim. At No. 2, Mia Linam and Samantha Robertson teamed together for an 8-4 win against Sydney Langer and Kamila Wong. The win for Trate and Weis came against Chang, a Division I transfer from the University of Washington, and freshman Kim, after the pair had run off seven straight wins to start the year before falling in the ITA Cup Quarterfinals.

Moving into singles, Weis nearly picked up a big win at No. 1 against the 2023 Centennial Conference Player of the Year, Mary Beth Hurley, but fell in a tiebreaker. Weis won the first set, 6-3, and surrendered the second, 6-2, before the two battled back and forth before a 10-8 final in the decisive third finished off the Captains' junior.

Rookie Kylie Schaefer also won the first set against her opponent at No. 6 singles for the Captains before Wong rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 win. At No. 3, Linam fought for five games in the second set but Langer managed to edge out the Captains' veteran 6-0, 7-5.

Christopher Newport opened the dual season with an 8-1 win over N.C. Wesleyan on Friday afternoon before suffering the 7-2 loss on Saturday. CNU will be 1-1 until Sunday, February 11 when they play host to Division I Hampton University in an 11:00 a.m. matchup at the James River Country Club.
