WAYNE, N.J. - Christopher Newport University tops the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 3-0 record, and the Captains have another tough road test on Saturday at William Paterson University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Wightman Stadium. The Captains, 5-2 overall, have won four of their last five and will be looking for their third straight win. The Pioneers are 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the NJAC, and have lost three straight games.
Paul Crowley's squad is coming off a 34-10 home victory over Kean University last Saturday during Homecoming Weekend at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. WPU dropped a 14-13 home game to Montclair State last Saturday.
"Again, the message has been this week that we can't afford to let down or look past anyone," Crowley said on Thursday. "William Paterson is a team with some great athletes and they dominated us just two years ago. We're going to have to take care of the ball, play tough, physical football, and be ready for a battle in the trenches. We're expecting a warm and sunny day with temperatures in the 80's, so we're preparing for that and conditioning ourselves heading into the game."
CNU sophomore wide receiver
Colin Hart is coming off a big afternoon for the Captains last Saturday, and was named the NJAC's Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Hart scored three times and compiled more than 200 yards in total offense in the Captains decisive victory over Kean. For the day, Hart caught seven passes for 184 yards and two scores, and a 48-yard scoring run gave him 232 yards of total offense. Sophomore running back
Gunner White also scored for CNU, and senior quarterback
Matt Dzierski threw one of his three touchdown passes to sophomore
Trey Hayes, with the other two going to Hart.
Christopher Newport and William Paterson will be meeting for the eighth time, and the Captains have won six of the previous seven games in the all-time series. The Captains registered a 31-7 victory over the Pioneers last year in Newport News, but fell to WPU two years ago in Wayne, 48-28.
The Captains are the only undefeated team in the NJAC standings at 3-0, followed by Montclair State and Salisbury at 3-1. TCNJ, William Paterson, and Rowan are all 1-2 in the conference followed by Kean at 0-4 to round out the standings heading into Saturday's action.
