No. 25 CNU Men's Soccer Travels to Washington and Lee Saturday for 1:00 pm Kickoff

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Looking to bounce back after just their second loss of the season, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, October 21 at Washington and Lee University. Kickoff against the Generals is set for 1:00 pm, with live stats and live video available online. 

The Captains are 9-2-2 on the season after dropping a 1-0 decision on the road to Salisbury Wednesday. Christopher Newport will be taking on Washington and Lee squad that is 9-2-4 on the season and is coming off a 9-0 victory against Bridgewater. 

The matchup will be the tenth all-time meeting between the two programs with Christopher Newport posting a 2-5-2 all-time record against the Generals. Last season, CNU hosted the then-No. 9 Washington and Lee squad on October 8 and played to a scoreless draw at Captains Field. The last CNU win in the series came in 2000 when current assistant coach Ryan Hagerty started for the Captains and helped lead CNU to a 1-0 victory in the NCAA Tournament. 

This year, the Captains have averaged just over two goals per game while being led by midfielder Mason Field in the scoring column. The veteran has 16 points on eight goals this season including three gamewinners. Rookie Drew McWhinney has also poured in 14 points this season with six goals and two helpers while boasting a team-high four game-winning goals. 

Saturday's matchup is the second to last game of the regular season as Christopher Newport is closing out the year on a three-game road swing. The Captains are 1-2-0 away from home this season while also picking up a win in the team's lone neutral site matchup. The defense has allowed just 11 goals in 13 games for a 0.85 goals-against average this season. Jacob Dudley has played a team-high 1,081 minutes while Jonathon Leiding isn't far behind with 922 total minutes playing in the back. 

Washington and Lee is unbeaten over their last six matchups, posting a 5-0-1 run since their last loss on September 27 against Roanoke. The Generals are among the best teams in the country and working into corner kick situations, averaging over 7.5 per game so far this season. It has helped them boast a top-50 scoring offense with 2.40 goals per game led by Weyimi Agbeyegbe with seven scores in 2023. Grant McCarty has also added six goals so far this season and has been dangerously accurate while posting a 54.1 shots on-goal percentage. 

Following Saturday's trip to Lexington, the Captains will close out the regular season at 2nd-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m.
