NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University opens the second half of the 2023 season Saturday afternoon, traveling to Glassboro, New Jersey, to take on the Profs of Rowan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Both teams are 3-2 overall, and both are 1-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).

Paul Crowley's squad looks to recover from a 27-24 overtime loss last week in its final non-conference game of the season at Dickinson College. All five games remaining on the schedule are NJAC contests.

"I think we've had a good week of preparation," Crowley said Thursday. "We've got to learn from our mistakes last week and put them behind us. We've got five NJAC games coming up, and we'll get a good challenge every week. Every team in this conference plays hard-nosed defense, and we're going to have to be strong in the trenches, and limit our mistakes if we expect to win."

Through the first half of the season, CNU was 3-0 at home but 0-2 on the road. Both defeats came in close games, as the Captains fell by six at Johns Hopkins (20-14), and by three in overtime last week at Dickinson (27-24). Rowan is coming off a 9-7 road victory last week at the College of New Jersey that saw the Profs pull out the victory thanks to a 30-yard scoring pass as time expired in the fourth quarter. Rowan fell to Johns Hopkins, 55-20, in Glassboro the week before.

The Saturday matinee at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium will be the 14th meeting all-time of the programs, and the Profs hold an 8-5 lead in the series. The Captains will be looking for their third straight victory in the series after registering a 20-14 triumph last season at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium.

All Captains games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. You can access the CNU radio broadcast by clicking on the link at the top of this story.
