Captains Bounce Back With 3-0 Win at Stockton Behind Brace by Mason Field

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Led by a two-goal effort from senior midfielder Mason Field, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team bounced back following their first loss of the season with a 3-0 blanking of Stockton University (4-2-4) on Sunday afternoon. Field scored his third game-winning goal of the year to lift the Captains to a 6-1-1 start this year.

Continuing his hot start to the season, Field recorded his first career brace in the win by scoring the first and third goals on Sunday. The senior Captain has scored in five of the eight CNU games this season with a team-leading six goals and 12 points.

His first goal against the Ospreys came in the 24th minute to get the Captains out to a first-half lead. Field finished after a scrum in front of the goal, picking up his fifth goal of the season.

Christopher Newport would double it's lead early in the second half when rookie Drew McWhinney notched his fourth goal of the season just under three minutes into the period. Fifth-year senior defender Jacob Dudley crossed into the box for McWhinney, who tapped in the shot for the score.

Adding an insurance goal late in the game, the Captains got a combination from Luke Peri to Field in the 88th minute of action.

Christopher Newport outshot Stockton, 9-5, including six shots on-goal. Ensuring the shutout, sophomore Hayden Dewey made five saves  in the game to keep the home team off the board. He paired with Dom Stumpo to snag the teams third shutout of the season and lower the Captains' goals-against average to 0.88 for the 2023 season.

The Captains will return to action with a pair of home games this week. First, CNU hosts Roanoke College on Wednesday, October 4 at 5:00 p.m before a 6:00 p.m. tilt on Saturday, October 7 against Salisbury.
