No. 1/4 CNU Women's Basketball Kicks Off Three Games in Four Days at Washington and Lee Sunday

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team faces a stiff test on the 2022-23 schedule this week as they are set to face three opponents in a four-day span, all on the road. The Captains (13-0) will first travel to Washington and Lee University (10-3) on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. before taking on William Peace University on Monday and the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday. 

Christopher Newport, ranked No. 1 in the WBCA Top 25 poll and No. 4 in the D3hoops.com national rankings, will look to extend it's season-opening win streak to 14 games while facing a Generals squad that is riding a three-game roll coming into Sunday afternoon. CNU owns a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series against Washington and Lee with two straight wins against the Generals.

W&L has dropped just three games this season, including an overtime contest against Mary Washington and a three-point setback to Swarthmore. Since the loss to the Garnet, Washington and Lee has gone 7-1 while improving to 7-0 and taking over first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. This season, the Generals lead the nation in blocks per game (7.8) and are among the nation's top teams in rebounding margin, ranking third (+15.3). 

The Captains will counter with one of the most dominant starts to a season in program history. Christopher Newport is one of just nine teams in Division III without a loss this season and has posted an impressive 57-1 record dating back to December 2019. CNU leads the nation in scoring margin, averaging +44.2 points per game this season, while also ranking second nationally in scoring (91.2 ppg) and field-goal percentage (.474). 

Graduate guard Sondra Fan ranks 10th in the nation in three-point shooting (.455) and leads the team in scoring with 14.1 points per game. Senior forward Anaya Simmons is averaging 12.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while leading the Captains with a .638 field-goal percentage this season. 

Senior Katy Rader is among the team's leader in minutes, playing 18.0 per game, and is having a breakout campaign in her third official season with the Royal Blue and Silver. She is second on the team in three-point shooting, knocking down 22 triples, while ranking third on the team in steals with 25. 

Following the matchup against W&L, Christopher Newport will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on William Peace (1-9) at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9. The game is a makeup rescheduled from November 22. Rounding out the three-game set away from home will be a trip to Mary Washington on Wednesday, January 11 marking the first time CNU has played three games in four days since the first three games of 2017-18 (Nov. 15-18).
