CNU Women's Basketball Ranked No. 1 and No. 3 Nationally; Captains Kick Off Four-Game Road Trip Wednesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will kick off a four-game road trip on Wednesday night as they travel to Southern Virginia University (7-8) for a 6:00 p.m. tip. In this week's national rankings, the Captains (16-0) held position at No. 1 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and moved up to No. 3 in the D3hoops.com Top 25. 

Christopher Newport picked up a pair of wins against Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference competition last week to remain undefeated on the season. Only five teams in Division III and 11 women's basketball teams in all of the NCAA (Division I, II and III) remain without a loss this season. The Captains are among them while continuing one of the most dominant runs in program history, going 59-1 over the team's last 60 games. 

The Captains have a 20-1 advantage in the all-time series against Southern Virginia including five straight victories in the matchup. CNU secured an 88-51 victory over the Knights at the Freeman Center last year. 

Southern Virginia is coming off a 78-70 setback at Brevard on Saturday, January 14 after back-to-back wins at Salem and Pfeiffer. Wednesday night's matchup will be streamed live online. Heading into the mid-week matchup, Christopher Newport leads the nation in scoring margin (+40.1) and ranks second in scoring offense (90.2 ppg) and field-goal percentage (.471). Senior Anaya Simmons ranks third in the nation in field-goal percentage, knocking down 64 percent of her shots. She uis averaging a team-high 8.6 rebounds per game while scoring 13.4 points per contest. 

At guard, fifth-year senior Sondra Fan is leading the team with 14.0 points per game. Fan is shooting 43.2 percent from beyond the arc and averaging over 2.5 three-pointers per game. Senior Katy Rader is coming off a career-high 23 points and seven made triples. She is averaging 8.1 points and 2.5 steals per game.

Courtney Olson and Addison Newman lead Southern Virginia this season as the only two Knights to start all 14 games. Olson is pouring in 11.9 points per game with 8.8 rebounds per contest. Newman has chipped in 9.6 points per game while also adding 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per this season. 

Following the Wednesday night bout, Christopher Newport will travel to Marymount University on Wednesday, January 25. .
