Captains Win Three Straight Sets to down Virginia Wesleyan

After dropping the first set, Christopher Newport Volleyball won the next three sets in a row to take down Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 at the Freeman Center.

First Set (Virginia Wesleyan 25-22)

The two sides showed strong attacks early in the match as Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan drove home 14 and 13 kills, respectively, in the first set. The Captains evened the set at 22 after forcing two attack errors from VWU, but the Marlins took the next three points in a row to close out the set and take the early advantage.

Second Set (Captains 25-23)

Seven service aces helped the Captains take down Virginia Wesleyan in the second set, starting with Julia Gleason's ace that put CNU up 1-0. Anna Dean served three aces as part of a 7-0 run, and Macy Burk's ace gave CNU a 14-8 advantage before the Marlins battled back to tie the set at 18. A couple of errors gave way to Sammy Carroll serving back-to-back aces and putting Christopher Newport back in front as they took the second set to even the match score.

Third Set (Captains 25-17)

A 6-0 run was the difference in the third set as the Captains were holding a 16-15 lead. Two kills from Megan James and Alyssa Dozier, and two attacking errors, put CNU up 22-15, allowing James, Mackenzie Wright, and Sammy Carroll to finish off the third set for the Captains and put CNU up 2-1.

Fourth Set (Captains 25-23)

The match looked destined for a fifth set when Virginia Wesleyan took a 20-11 lead following a CNU timeout. But the Captains rebounded and scored 14 of the next 17 points to win the set and match. Two kills from Carroll bookended a slew of VWU errors, and Megan James drove home three kills in row to force match point. James followed that up with the solo block the closed out the match.
