NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
The Christopher Newport University football squad is 2-2 after completing non-conference play, and the Captains open a new month Saturday by playing their first of six league games in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Paul Crowley's squad hosts the Profs of Rowan University (2-1) at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

The Captains are coming off a 38-7 triumph last Saturday over Catholic at TowneBank Stadium to complete the non-conference schedule. CNU's defense set a new school mark by allowing minus 48 yards rushing for the day, and also recorded six sacks and three interceptions, one of which was returned 44 yards by senior Josh Uvodich for a touchdown. The Captains' offense scored four times, all on runs, including two by freshman Tyler Perry. The Family Weekend victory was played in front of 6,148 fans, the third-largest crowd in program history.

Rowan enters Saturday's tilt with a 2-1 mark, and the Profs are coming off a 28-24 home loss to Salve Regina. Jay Accorsi's team opened the year with back-to-back road victories at Widener (42-20) and Springfield (38-35).

The matchup will be the 13th of the two programs, with Rowan holding an 8-4 edge in the all-time series, which dates back to 2002. CNU has won three of the last four in the series, and recorded a 35-32 victory in Glassboro, N.J., last November 6th to end the season for the Captains

"The New Jersey Athletic Conference is a terrific test year in and year out," Crowley said. "You can expect a great battle every week from every school, and we're going to have to be up to the test. Rowan looks like its returning to the days when they were a national power, and they're always well coached. I know we're looking forward to competing against the league schedule that's in front of us."

Tickets for the game will be available at the gate prior to kickoff. The stadium gates will open to fans at 12 noon. All Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
