NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport and the Apprentice School meet for the first time ever on the football field Saturday night. The two programs, located just seven miles apart, will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at Kelchner Field at TowneBank Stadium. The Captains are 1-1 heading into Saturday's showdown, while the Builders are off to a 2-0 start.
"For the Newport News schools to play each other like this is a very special thing," Captains Head Coach
Paul Crowley said. "Sometimes in rivalry games, there may be some dislike...but in this case I know our guys have nothing but respect for their program. Many of our student-athletes played in high school against guys on their squad, so there's a familiarity. I think it's going to be a great game and good for the area."Â
Christopher Newport will be looking to bounce back following a 24-20 defeat last Saturday to Averett University at TowneBank Stadium. The Builders, who beat Averett in Danville in Week 1, posted a 27-7 home triumph last Saturday over Brevard College.
"We've had a good week of practice," Crowley continued. "I know we're ready to put last week behind us and follow it with a solid effort. I know there will be great atmosphere and excitement, especially for this first meeting ever."
Tickets for the non-conference game will be available at TowneBank Stadium Saturday. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m.
All Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
