Christopher Newport Outlasts Washington & Lee in Midweek Win

Christopher Newport took down Washington & Lee in five sets on Thursday night at the Freeman Center.

First Set (Captains 25-20)

The Captains were incredibly accurate with their attacks in the first set, committing just one error with 14 kills. CNU was trailing 11-9, but the Captains rolled off nine of the next ten points to take a commanding lead. Kills from Mackenzie Wright and Maddie Carter helped close out the first set for CNU.

Second Set (Captains 26-24)

Macy Burk started the set with two kills to give the Captains an early lead. It looked as if CNU might run away with the second set, but Washington & Lee took six points in a row to tie the score at 19. From there, the two sides traded blows until an errant serve gave set point to W&L at 24-23. Maddie Carter evened the score with a kill from Sammy Carroll, then Noelle Star served an ace to bring up set point for the Captains. The Generals missed their next attack and CNU took a 2-0 lead.

Third Set (Washington & Lee 26-24)

Mackenzie Wright totaled seven kills in the third set as part of her team-best 16 in the match. Leading 23-20, Christopher Newport had an opportunity for a sweep after Maddie Carter's kill set up match point. But the Generals scored six straight to force at least one more set.

Fourth Set (Washington & Lee 25-14)

CNU couldn't get anything going on the attacking front in the fourth set. The Captains could only muster seven kills, their lowest set total of the night. A service ace from Sammy Carroll looked to be the start of a comeback, but Washington & Lee held on to force a deciding fifth set.

Fifth Set (Captains 15-13)

Two kills from Macy Burk were part of a 5-1 start to the fifth set, but the Generals quickly tied things up again. Kills from Carter and Wright bookended Noelle Star's fourth service ace of the match as the Captains went up 10-8. After W&L error and back-to-back kills from Carter gave CNU a 13-10 lead, Macy Burk's kill and another General error helped CNU take the set and match.

  • The Captains totaled 15.5 blocks on the night, the most in a match this season. Macy Burk (9) and Alyssa Dozier (8) led the way with career-highs.
