FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The dynamic pair of underclassmen for Christopher Newport added another marquee win on Sunday morning, but
Tessa Trate and
Raine Weis' win at No. 1 doubles would be all the nationally-ranked Captains could score in a 5-1 setback in the 2022 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship against the University of Mary Washington. The Eagles secured the conference title for the 18th consecutive season.
The 15th-ranked Eagles captured wins at 2 and 3 doubles and swept the top three singles points to clinch the automatic berth into next week's NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships. Draws will be announced on Monday.

Raine Weis matched up for a win over the No. 3-ranked doubles pair in the Atlantic South region when they toppled Abby Moghtader and Lauren Quinn. Ranked No. 4 themselves, Trate and Weis raced out to a 6-3 lead in the match before the Mary Washington pair rallied back to within one game, 6-5. The CNU tandem snagged momentum back, however, and won the match 8-6.
It was the first point scored against the Eagles in conference tournament action since 2018 when
Emily Morgan and
Isabelle Wessel earned a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles in the championship match. For their efforts, the Captains' pair were each named to the C2C All-Tournament Team. Trate and Weis were 2-0 in doubles and 1-1 in the two singles matches in this season's tournament.
Ana Clara Borga and
Kendra Womack battled against Hana Kimmey and Emily Beckner at No. 3 doubles, but the hosts earned an 8-4 win to carry a 2-1 advantage into singles play. In a pair of regionally-ranked matchups at 1 and 2 singles, the Eagles veterans secured wins and the match was clinched when Mary Washington won at No. 3 as well.
Christopher Newport closes out the dual portion of their schedule with an 8-8 overall record this season. The Captains appeared in the program's seventh straight conference championship match.
